NAIM – SINOHYDRO HAND OVER DONATION TO CHENGDU CHINA EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

Naim Cendera Holdings Berhad (NAIM) together with its partner, Sinohydro Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd jointly donated CNY100,000 to victims of the May 12 earthquake at Chengdu in Sichuan province of China that left tens of thousands dead or missing.

The handing over was ceremony held at Level 10 of Wisma Naim on Sunday with Naim’s acting Managing Director, Dr Sharifuddin Abdul Wahab leading the way in presenting the cheque to the Consul General of The People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Mr Xie Fugeng and witnessed by Managing Director of Sinohydro (M) Sdn Bhd, Mr Che Weili.

In his brief welcoming speech, Dr Sharifuddin disclosed that the donation is aid of the victims whose lives are devastated by the massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake – the worst in China’s history.

“We are deeply shocked and grieved at the loss of many lives as well as damage to property caused by the severe earthquake that hit China and we hope the small donation could contribute to humanitarian aid for the victims” he said.

Official figures (as of June 5) has stated that 69,127 are confirmed dead, including 68,612 in Sichuan province and 373,612 injured with 17,918 still listed as missing.

The earthquake left about 4.8 million people homeless, though the number could be as high as 11 million people.

It is the deadliest and strongest earthquake to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, which killed at least 240,000 people. At the time of disaster, approximately 15 million people lived in the affected area.
